“In With The Old puts the sass in Saskatchewan” –Jim Lauderdale

Since their formation just three and a half years ago, In With The Old boasts an impressive list of accomplishments for such a short time in existence: two albums under their belt (2014’s Rollin’ On Down the Plains and 2017’s My Mother’s Couch), a nomination for ‘Group of the Year’ at the Saskatchewan Country Music awards; many Canadian tours playing countless festivals, fundraisers and corporate events, and prestigious concert halls; first place in Blueberry Bluegrass Festival's Band Contest; and a USA debut at none other than Merlefest 2016 in North Carolina. They have showcased at IBMA in Raleigh, NC, USA, at Breakout West in Regina, SK, and at Folk Alliance International in Kansas City.

Central Saskatchewan's IWTO seamlessly combine raw talent and prairie camaraderie with a passion and respect for the music from the past. Young and dedicated, they take an extremely unique approach to memorable old-tyme music through gifted harmonies and infectious songwriting – and though the songs and stories they tell are filtered with a small town perspective – these kids see through a colourful, worldly lens.
Though more than proficient on their traditional bluegrass instruments and expert all-night campfire jammers at bluegrass festivals, this young trio, whose skilled performances belie their age, have been called a crossover band more than once. Composed of multi-instrumentalists Ellen Froese-Kooijenga, Kasia Thorlakson, and Jaxon Lalonde, In With The Old is highly influenced by great traditional bluegrass and old-time artists like Bill Monroe, the Carter Family, and the Stanley Brothers, but also by countless artists in ranging genres, from rockabilly to swing to 60s folk to punk. Their performances showcase a sound which features fiery-hot banjo, guitar, and mandolin licks, heavenly three-part harmonies, and meaningful songwriting.

Professionals without a doubt, one of the band’s many goals is to help restore meaning and authenticity to modern folk music. With their endearingly awkward stage presence, sharp, witty, and definitely dry sense of humour, and ‘out-there’ fashion sense, these three certainly know how to turn heads. In order to avoid their fear of remaining stagnant, their sound is also ever-shifting. After going electric at a recent show, they consider it a big accomplishment that no one from the crowd yelled rude names at them! Though they highly respect old-time and bluegrass musicians of the past, they feel ready to branch out into a new sound that is entirely their own. Like Jim Lauderdale once said, “In With The Old puts the ‘sass’ in Saskatchewan”! The band is looking forward to a summer filled with Canadian festival appearances.
